| Name: | Marie McCullough | |||||||||
| Location: | Dist. of Columbia, United States | |||||||||
| Bio: | Name: Marie Caillean McCullough Age: 28 Physical: Marie is average height, with dark red-brown hair and grey eyes. Her shoulders and arms are somewhat bulkier than you'd expect for a woman, but overall she gives off an aura of extreme competence and femininity. She tends to dress in flattering suits and skirts – think what the women in West Wing wear, only less masculine. Marie could probably kick most folks' ass, due to a combination of working out and aikido training, but in keeping with the aikido discipline would prefer things not get to that point at all. Former Deity Name and Pantheon: Brigid (Brigit/Bride/Brighid/Brigantia, among other spellings), Celtic Personality: Marie is in many ways a classic intellectual. She is not, however, an idealist to go along with that. Eminently practical, she is a passionate woman who loves to feel feminine but will never consider herself inferior to anyone, male or female. She enjoys music, and plays both double and electric bass, though her days of dreaming she can run off and join a band are over. Marie adores children, particularly babies, but shows no signs of settling down with anyone – in fact, she garnered a reputation back in college for going after the bad boys. As a freshman in the House, such a reputation is rarely helpful, so Marie's mostly put her sexual and romantic life on hold. Prone to losing her temper in extraordinary displays of swearing and vicious wit, Marie can't help but have a reputation in various circles in Washington. What that reputation is varies wildly – her loyalty and enmity are both easy to earn and hard to lose, unless actions over a period of time show her initial judgment to be wrong. (It rarely is.) Additionally, her friends span a wide range of people. Marie is capable of talking pretty much anyone into anything, and making them think it was their idea the whole time. Occasionally this borders on the creepy and surreal, so she tries not to think about it too much. Marie would someday like a quieter place a couple hours outside of D.C., with an enormous passel of dogs, cats, and horses (a girl can dream, right?). Right now she's driven to make a difference in federal government any way she can. She takes copious notes on everything and probably suffers from a mild form of hypergraphia. Outside of work, she can be found pretty much anywhere – on the Mall, in her apartment, shopping, at the symphony or a play, at a restaurant or bar with friends. History: Born to your stereotypical Chicago Irish cop and stay-at-home-mom, Marie's learned from birth that you earn your way to the top. She grew up on South Side Chicago, and still maintains contact with her parents. She adores Chicago for its galleries and museums, but realized early on that she didn’t want to be stuck in the Midwest her whole life. Marie stuck around long enough to get accepted to the U of C for a degree in political science, working her way through college to make up for what the scholarships and grants didn't pay for. Along the way, she picked up minors in quantum physics and music, and nearly other minors in comparative literature and philosophy. She's multilingual in French, German, Spanish, and a smattering of Latin and Greek due to her graduate studies, also in political science, emphasis in public policy. George Washington was more than happy to grant her PhD in four years' study, and to get that annoying uppity woman out of their department. Marie doesn't talk that much about her life prior to Washington, less because she's ashamed and more because she understands that any information given will be dragged through newspapers and databases in an attempt to find dirty laundry. There is one thing people might find, but as she speaks out in favor of women's rights and is vehemently pro-choice, there are less ways to upset her career with that than there might be. Raised Catholic, she's since given up practicing any religion, though she does feel a deep connection to something. If she could tell you what, she would – the normally eloquent politics hound falls flat when it comes to spiritual matters. Marie knows something's out there, but couldn't possibly tell you what, let alone explain it to herself. Strengths: The gift of inspiration, usually masked as persuasion. An incredible ability to multitask and juggle projects one of which would make most consultants weep. General people skills with all kinds of people. Some affinity with fire, though she hasn't discovered that part yet and will probably freak out when she does. In the future, she will probably gain the ability to increase fertility and ease childbirth, both in herself and in others (through physical touch). Weaknesses: Her temper is just one aspect of not knowing when to stop. Marie will hammer a point into the ground long after it's clear to everyone else that she's won the debate. She tries to avoid taking her temper out on others, but fails often enough that it's become a matter of legend among her circle of acquaintances. Marie is bad at making close friendships, for all that she's friendly with everyone, and keeps most of herself private. There are few people around she really clicks with; occasionally she's prone to viewing everyone as objects to be moved in a game. These times frighten her more than anything when she comes out of them, and to make up for them she often plunges into charity work. Marie is also incapable of not doing anything, as far as anyone can tell (including herself). Thankfully, she rarely suffers from insomnia – she simply doesn't sleep too much, and is usually up with daylight. General Deity History: Brigid was the Celtic triple goddess of flame, the hearth, poetry, inspiration, smithcraft, war, fertility and childbirth, and all things considered elevated or of lofty aspirations. This includes the literal: hills, highlands, high-rising flames. It also includes the figurative and psychological. Her holiday is Imbolc, generally celebrated on or about February 2. Brigid was one of the Dagda's daughters and wife to Bres of the Fomorians (author note: given the wars between the Tuatha de Danaan and the Formorians, I am considering this to have been a marriage of convenience and hope for a truce, definitely not for love and probably Bres tried or was abusive to her.) She also had three sons by Tuireann, the Celtic equivalent of the dark thunder god Taranis. These sons were gods of the various forms of smithcraft, who forged the weapons the Tuatha de used to battle the Fomorians, and one of them made King Nuada's silver hand. Eventually Brigid was sainted as the foster-mother of Jesus and is still one of the premier saints of Ireland, along with Patrick. She also came over to the Americas as Maman Brigitte of the loa, in a more earthy and fertility-oriented version. Played by: Claudia Christian Other Pertinent Info As Needed: For some reason, Marie feels compelled lately to keep a candle always burning at her apartment. The candle never burns out before she gets home to light another one, and leaves nothing but drips of candle wax on the cloth she's put over a side table. She also hasn't thrown any of the candle stubs away, though she'll be damned if she knows why or what to do with them instead. | |||||||||
